IDI Course JAV-08
Java without Objects -- a gentle introduction

Java presents intimidating difficulties to programmers whose main experience has been in traditional business application development. Some of those difficulties arise from the unfamiliarity of Java's syntax and program structure, while others reflect Java's inconsistencies and complexity.

Programmers who try to confront both kinds of difficulty in a single concentrated course usually end up feeling confused and fail to acquire sufficient command of Java to produce high-quality software. This course gives the student confidence in mastering the C-like subset of Java, with it's strange-looking syntax, richness of operators, poverty of data types, and pseudo-class program structure.

Although Java's C-like subset by itself is insufficient for serious software development, JAV-08 prepares the student for follow-on courses in object-oriented Java programming, such as JAV-09 -- Fast Track to OOP and Java for COBOL Programmers.

Length:

4 half-day sessions

Prerequisites:

Application programming experience in COBOL, BASIC, RPG, or PL/SQL

Designed for:

Objectives:

Upon successfully completing JAV-08 the participant will be able:

  1. to use the Java compiler and interpreter (JDK/SDK) to build and run programs packaged as multiple pseudo-classes.
  2. to develop procedural programs using:
    • Java's primitive data types and simple character strings.
    • Java's C-like expression syntax and flow-control statements.
    • static functions.
    • screen output and keyboard input
  3. after a period for practice and reinforcement to enroll in object oriented programming courses, such as JAV-09 -- Fast Track to OOP and Java for COBOL Programmers.
